The Gift of Feedback Comes All Year

In this season of giving and gratitude, I like to reflect on the gifts of feedback I have received throughout the year. What have I learned? Where have I grown? What needs additional focus?

Roger Schwarz has long been someone I follow and whose voice positively impacts the ways I show up as a leader and team member. I pull up his 2014 Harvard Business Review posting, "Clumsy Feedback is a Poorly Wrapped Gift" every December to guide my reflection.

Questions like "Have I stayed curious and asked for clarity when I have received feedback that is vague? or "Have I demonstrated empathy in responding to feedback that "stings"? By staying present and genuinely seeking to understand, I not only help myself to ensure that I am tapping into the opportunities all feedback brings, but I also create an environment of trust and transparency. And who doesn't wish for that on any given day?

What questions do you like to ask yourself and others to understand how you can do better?
